Asia in St. Louis: Stories of Community Building and Resilience In-Person

In anticipation of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and in recognition of the historical and cultural contributions of individuals AAPI community in St. Louis, Washington University Libraries and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion of Washington University in St. Louis invite you to join us for a forum on the history of Asian Americans in St. Louis. With the support of the Missouri Humanities Council, Washington University students and staff have created a series of webpages using GIS (Geographic Information System) technology to showcase the contributions of the Asian American community on St. Louis, called the ‘Asia in St. Louis’ project. 

Program Schedule:

  • 4:05 pm: Welcoming remarks: Jordan J.P. Cooper, Director of Cross-Cultural Connections, Center for Diversity and Inclusion
  • 4:12 pm: Keynote speaker: Anna Eriko Crosslin, President & CEO of the International Institute of St. Louis for 42 years. Crosslin will reflect on the evolution of St. Louis’ Asian American community, sharing experiences from her private and professional life.
  • 4:25 pm: Student Presentations Early Chinese and Chinese Americans in Saint Louis
    • Presenters: Rider Sarah (Bachelor, Global Studies) & Chenxi Luo (PhD candidate, History Department)
  • 4:40 pm: Memories of Japanese American Internment and the Legacies of Richard Henmi and Gyo Obata in Saint Louis 
    • Presenter: Yue Wang (PhD candidate, East Asian Languages and Cultures)
  • 4:55 pm: Rethinking the Asian American Identity
    • Presenter: Joan Wang (East Asian Librarian, University Libraries)
  • 5:05 pm: Q&A Discussion and Refreshments

Free and open to all, registration is required. Refreshments will be provided.
