Modern Literature Collection Open House and Type-In

Modern Literature Collection Open House and Type-In In-Person

Join WashU Libraries for an open house of our Modern Literature Collection, accompanied by a type-in.

First, visit the Special Collections Mendle Classroom, where you can explore highlights from the Modern Literature Collection with a curated selection of poetry, fiction and nonfiction drafts that will be out for perusal. These drafts show the creative processes of such beloved writers as Mary Jo Bang, Aaron Coleman, Kathryn Davis, Russell Edson, William H. Gass, Charles Johnson, James Merrill, Howard Nemerov, May Swenson and Joy Williams.

After reviewing the drafts, walk to adjacent Room 142 to transport yourself back to the pre-computer era when many of these authors produced their most iconic works. Clickety Clack Typewriters, of Rolla, Missouri, will showcase some of their vintage typewriters for you to try out. Retype a page from the Modern Literature Collection, or simply take advantage of the screen-free environment (and erase-free environment) and let your own creativity flow in an analog setting.

Light refreshments provided. Selected typewriters available for purchase.

Free and open to all, registration requested.
